Solstice Avebury (June 21 2017)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Those who witnessed the dawn are fading gradually<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some remain in small communities under the decorated trees<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Temperatures are in the nineties<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Everything is busy but still<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From my vantage I can hear pan pipes mixed lightly with heavy rock<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People are dancing near the stones and chanting ancient words<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whose meanings were lost over a thousand years ago<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>I am going to buy the shit out of the shop<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Without any money<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>We have no money<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Their excitement evaporates and the barefoot trio return to the shady tree<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>I have five pounds<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>I have ten<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Do not waste it on alcohol<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Soft drinks and chilled water<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>You are turning into a square Mike<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Somebody has to be sensible<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Their words fade as they walk slowly along the rough chalk path towards the village<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wiltshire is known as a county of harsh landscapes but today she is benign<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So very benign<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Her fields stretch out as far as the eye can see<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some are being harvested<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Others simmer in the heat of the day<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I decide to walk to Silbury which is about a mile distant<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0My journey will necessitate the climbing of a shallow hill<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is the Hill of Sudden Dreams<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Summw<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The buzz bees say as they swarm without malice over the warm wheat fields<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Summw<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I do not understand the language of bees<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Summw<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bees do not have a language<br \/>\ntheirs is a musical existence<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As I sit on the descending path<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I look at Silbury in the haze<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She is as fecund as she always is<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0But today she seems more fertile<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I would like to roll my hand over her swollen belly<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And drink from her milky breasts<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Open your eyes now and return to the small village through the avenue of stones<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I hear these words on the summer breeze<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Do you know what is down that road sir<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>There are a few more stones but really<\/em>\u00a0<em>there is not much more to see<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Can you recommend anything else<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>We have walked around the stone so many times<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>In this heat<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>My sister is mad<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>All Canadians are mad<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Is it always this hot in the UK?<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>No this is quite exceptional<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Usually it is 23 or 24 in June<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Not 34 degrees as it is today<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>I was told that it rains a lot in the UK<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Maybe that is true for the northern counties but the south normally remains dry<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The taller of the two sisters points to the\u00a0Hill of Sudden Dreams<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>What is over that hill?<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Silbury you will find Silbury on the other side of the hill<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>But beware of the hill as it looks placid from here but is a hefty climb<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Stop at times and admire the view<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I do not mention the soft sudden dreams<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That they might experience on their climb<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is not my place to tell them<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I would not like to see their disappointment<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Should the dreams evaporate and fade<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Thank you they said that the English were polite and kind and you certainly are<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>It was my pleasure<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To my surprise the smaller sister fist pumps me<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Enjoy your day<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>I am sure we will<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Goodbye<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Within minutes the two sisters are figures in a pastel landscape<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And then they are gone<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I visit the old inn for a welcome drink<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>The ice machine has broken down<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>What a day for it to happen<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I sit for a while with my warm drink<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My bus is due in ten<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I will be in Marlborough quite soon<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With its public school and wide high street<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Where I will change buses for the last time<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And travel through the dark Savernake Forest<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Towards the sleepy town of Hungerford<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Where I will rest
